PGY1 - Winter Haven Hospital

Why did I choose to complete a residency?
While completing my Pharm. D. at UF COP, I had the opportunity to explore different specialties within our field. I quickly came to realize that completing residency would not only expand my knowledge in unimaginable ways but would also allow me to provide evidence-based patient care while forming part of an interprofessional team. Residency will allow me to become a well-rounded clinical pharmacist while providing excellent patient care.

Why did I choose Winter Haven Hospital at BayCare?
While being an APPE student at BayCare I realized that this institution excels in professionalism, but it also provides a welcoming and safe learning environment for employees and students. My perspective of this institution was solidified during the interview process where every pharmacist showed me the caring and supportive environment they foster for their PGY-1 pharmacists. I knew Winter Haven Hospital was the place for me, a place where quality learning is provided while offering a safe learning environment.

PGY1 - Mease Countryside Hospital

Why did I choose to complete a residency?
I chose to pursue a residency in order to be able to practice pharmacy in a multidisciplinary setting in an effort to improve patient outcomes and well-being. Residency provides me with a structured program in order to sharpen my clinical skills in a number of different areas, while working as an integral part of a healthcare team. Working under experienced preceptors allows me to gain firsthand knowledge of the skills required to provide a high quality of patient care, and I hope to be able to being my own unique views and experiences to the role in order become the best pharmacist that I can possibly be.

Why did I choose Mease Countryside Hospital at BayCare?
I chose Mease Countryside’s residency program because I have had direct experience with the hospital as a local to the area, and I’m aware of the high standard of care that they hold themselves to. Working with Mease Countryside allows me to give back to the community that raised me, while learning from of the most experienced and knowledgeable pharmacists in the area. Mease Countryside always emphasizes putting the patient first, and their approach is something I’d like to be at the forefront of my own pharmacy practice.

Macy Richards
PGY1 - Morton Plant Hospital

Why did I choose to complete a residency?
I chose to complete a residency because I was incredibly inspired by how well-rounded residents became upon completion of a PGY-1. I was also drawn to the vast opportunities that could come from residency training. As someone with interests in critical care, emergency medicine, oncology, teaching, and research, I felt residency was the best way to explore many of those at the same time and find an area I was passionate about. It was also important for me to have individualized training by those working in the field for several years to make sure I transitioned well into such a clinical and high stakes role.

Why did I choose Morton Plant Hospital at BayCare?
I chose to pursue my PGY-1 at Morton Plant Hospital mainly because of the culture and my experience during the interview process. All throughout the course of my interview, leading up, and after I was met with respect, timeliness, and enthusiasm. Before my interview I read great reviews online from current employees and learned during the interview about the high rate of employee retention. I asked questions surrounding resident support and instantly felt that this was a nurturing environment that would allow me to grow and learn at my pace. With critical care and neurology being my highest areas of interest, I was ecstatic to learn that Morton Plant was recognized as a comprehensive stroke center and offered a PGY-2 in critical care.

Rachel Culley
PGY1 - St. Anthony's Hospital

Why did I choose to complete a residency?
I chose to complete a residency to get the most out of my career as a pharmacist. I wanted to make meaningful interventions in patients’ treatment regimens and overall experience in the healthcare space. I felt the best way to achieve this was to become a clinical pharmacist through completing a residency. Through residency, you not only build your clinical knowledge, but gain leadership and teaching experiences that will be useful during your time as a clinical pharmacist. Residency also exposes you to a wide variety of topics and cases in one year which gives you so much knowledge going into your career as a clinical pharmacist.

Why did I choose St. Anthony’s Hospital at BayCare?
One of the reasons I chose St. Anthony’s was because of the diverse rotations they offer. Many of their required rotations are topics I am interested in and believe are crucial in becoming a well-rounded pharmacist. But perhaps the more important reason I chose St. Anthony’s was because of the culture. During my interview here, I felt like I was already a part of the team. The preceptors and staff were warm, welcoming and made me feel like a fellow colleague. It is important to choose a program that will not only align with your professional goals, but a place that you can feel at home. For me, that was St. Anthony’s. Becoming a resident here has only confirmed my initial feelings and choices and has truly surpassed my expectations.
